Black Background Photoshoots

Black background photoshoots are a popular choice, often displayed proudly in customers’ homes. These striking, natural-light photos showcase your horse at its best, with no artificial lighting needed. All I need is a barn, stable, or indoor school or similar. I’ll guide you with positioning your horse to create stunning, artistic shots. Check out my social media for more examples!

Frequently asked questions

All we need to create a black background photo is a barn, stable, indoor school, or similar, with access to natural lighting from the outside. We will then position your horse in the opening to create a darkening effect in the background, which I then enhance during editing to achieve the desired look.

I would prepare your horse as if you were going to a competition. Try and avoid bathing on the day of your photoshoot because if the coat hasn’t dried in time this isn’t the most appealing for photos. Dig out your tack cleaner, and don’t forget to do your bridle, then have a think about whether you’d like to plait. Most people just give their horses mane a tidy up, but plaiting can look extremely smart too – the choice is yours. Oh, don’t forget the treats! Your horse will thank me for that one.

I use washable, non-toxic PVA glue to stick the delicate sheet of gold leaf onto your horse. It’s the same as what you would remember at school during art class. Afterwards, some water and a scrubbing brush is the best way to remove the glue.

If you’re keen to create black background photos of your dog(s), I’d highly recommend a studio photoshoot. They offer a wider variety of photos and also avoid any mud.

In short, we will reschedule! I appreciate that no one fancies getting drenched during a photoshoot and the British weather can be unpredictable. If the forecast is dry, cloudy or sunny, I will advise we stick with the plan and go ahead. But if it looks like a washout, I will discuss moving to a new date or time. I usually book one session per day so we can move the photoshoot to a different time if the weather turns – e.g. the morning might look drier than the afternoon.

The photoshoot itself is just the beginning. After your session, I will head home and start to narrow down the images to just the best of the best. Once I have the final photos selected, it’s time to get to work with editing each photo, which I feel is just as important as taking the photos. This process can take anything from 2-4 weeks depending on the time of year. I will let you know at the photoshoot my current turnaround time. Once ready, we will book you in for a private viewing session to unveil your stunning photos on the big screen. You will be able to purchase extra photos during the viewing with access to an exclusive price list.

From the date of the viewing session, you will have up to 6 months to purchase any photos you’d like. During the viewing session you will get access to some extra bundles and deals, which are available on that day only. A different, more basic, price list is available for additional purchases within the remaining 6 months. Due to website storage fees, I cannot keep photos online for longer than this and there will be a reaccess fee if you wish to view them at a later date.

I offer a variety of different products, including digital copies, wooden framed prints, canvases, photobooks and much more. Please get in touch to be sent my current photoshoot product price list.
